Introduction:
As a medical professor, it is important to educate and guide students in not only their technical skills but also in professional ethics and leadership. In this discussion post, we will be discussing advocacy and its importance in the healthcare industry. We will explore two options – AHIMA Advocacy and Federal Register – and identify leadership strategies that can be implemented to gain buy-in for a particular agenda or rule.
Option 1: AHIMA Advocacy
The AHIMA Advocacy Agenda lists various topics that promote the mission, values, and principles of the profession. One of the agenda topics that caught my attention is related to telehealth.
In my own words, this agenda topic is about increasing access to healthcare services using new technologies such as teleconferencing, remote monitoring devices, and mobile health applications. This topic is especially relevant given the current COVID-19 pandemic, which has brought to light the need for remote healthcare services.
I strongly support this advocacy since telehealth offers numerous benefits, such as reducing healthcare costs, improving patient outcomes, and increasing patient satisfaction. Telehealth can also reach populations with limited access to healthcare services due to geographical or financial barriers.
A leadership strategy that can be used to gain buy-in for this agenda topic is employee training and development. With new technologies emerging every day, it is essential for healthcare providers to stay updated with the latest tools and techniques. By investing in employee training, healthcare organizations can ensure that their staff is equipped to deliver high-quality telehealth services.
A scholarly source that supports the use of telehealth is a study published in the Journal of Medical Internet Research (Jang-Jaccard et al., 2018). The study found that telehealth can improve access to healthcare services, particularly in rural areas.
Option 2: Federal Register
The Federal Register website lists various rules and proposed rules related to healthcare. One proposed rule that caught my attention is the “Medicare and Medicaid Programs; CY 2021 Home Health Prospective Payment System Rate Update” rule.
In my own words, this proposed rule aims to update the payment rates and wage indexes for home health agencies that provide services to Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries. This rule is relevant since home health services are essential for patients who require skilled nursing care and therapy services at home.
I support this proposed rule since it can help address the staffing shortages and workforce challenges faced by home health agencies. Home health agencies can attract and retain qualified staff by offering competitive wages and salaries.
A leadership strategy that can be used to gain buy-in for this proposed rule is employee engagement. Home health agencies can involve their staff in the decision-making process and seek feedback on how to improve the work environment and patient care. By involving employees, home health agencies can create a culture of collaboration and teamwork that supports high-quality care.
A scholarly source that supports the importance of employee engagement is a study published in the Journal of Healthcare Management (Buchan et al., 2018). The study found that employee engagement can lead to positive outcomes such as increased patient satisfaction and improved clinical quality.

In response to my peers’ presentations, I agree with their support for telehealth and the need for employee engagement in healthcare organizations. Telehealth can indeed increase access to healthcare services, and employee engagement can lead to positive outcomes such as improved patient satisfaction.
Regarding the PowerPoint presentations, I appreciate the use of visuals and concise bullet points. One suggestion for improvement would be to add more context and elaboration in the notes section to provide a better understanding of the content. Additionally, it would be beneficial to provide specific examples of how the leadership strategies can be implemented in practice.
