Week 1 Midweek Assignment
In a Microsoft Word document of 2-3 pages formatted in APA style, you will describe a draft proposal for your capstone project using the format below. Please note that the title and reference pages should not be included in the total page count of your paper.
The introduction establishes the scope, context, and significance of the research being conducted by summarizing current understanding and background information (literature) about the topic, stating the purpose of the work in the form of the research problem and research question(s), explaining briefly the methodological approach used to examine the research problem, and highlights the potential outcomes your study may reveal.
A problem statement is the description of a currently existing issue, which needs to be addressed with evidence-based interventions. The statement of the problem is the focal point of the research. Be sure to back up the noted issue/problem with evidence. Must include citations of evidence.
To help you formulate your research question or questions the following website may be useful: https://researchrundowns.com/intro/writing-research-questions/
One to two research questions for your capstone project are suggested. Based on the constraint of project length of 10 weeks you may not have time to address a multitude of questions. One research question may be sufficient for your project and will make your life a lot easier.
The methodology section of a research paper answers two main questions: How was the data collected or generated? You must include when and how you will collect the pre-intervention data, what the intervention(s) is and when/how the intervention(s) will be implemented, then how and when you will perform your post-intervention data measurement. Lastly, how the data will be analyzed. A friendly reminder that unless your project has gone through the IRB process you will not be allowed to collect data on more than 3 people. For data collection, you will choose 3 people from your aggregate.
Develop a timetable considering the following questions:
When will your research start and finish?
Are there particular stages to the research – e.g. piloting, then main research? Screening interviews, then a main study? If there are stages, what are they?
What objectives have you set for this investigation? Are they addressed in the timeline?
Is the timetable realistic?
Is it influenced by external constraints or deadlines?
How will you provide regular updates and progress reports and to whom will you provide them? How will you demonstrate progress?

The capstone project proposal I am presenting focuses on the research problem of medication non-adherence in elderly patients with chronic diseases. Medication non-adherence can lead to poor health outcomes, increased healthcare utilization, and higher healthcare costs. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), medication non-adherence is a common issue in elderly patients, with approximately 50% of patients not taking their medications as prescribed. This problem requires evidence-based interventions to address it. Therefore, the purpose of this capstone project is to examine the effectiveness of a pharmacist-led intervention in improving medication adherence in elderly patients with chronic diseases.
Medication non-adherence is a major issue in elderly patients with chronic diseases. The consequences of medication non-adherence can be severe and include poor health outcomes, increased healthcare utilization, and higher healthcare costs. According to a study published in the Journal of Managed Care & Specialty Pharmacy, medication non-adherence results in approximately $300 billion in excess healthcare costs annually in the United States. Non-adherence is especially common in elderly patients, with approximately 50% of patients not taking their medications as prescribed. This problem requires evidence-based interventions to address it. Therefore, the purpose of this capstone project is to examine the effectiveness of a pharmacist-led intervention in improving medication adherence in elderly patients with chronic diseases.
1. Does a pharmacist-led intervention improve medication adherence in elderly patients with chronic diseases?
2. What are the factors influencing medication non-adherence in elderly patients with chronic diseases?
The study will use a quasi-experimental design to evaluate the effectiveness of the pharmacist-led intervention in improving medication adherence in elderly patients with chronic diseases. The study will recruit a sample of 30 elderly patients with chronic diseases from a primary care clinic. Patients will be randomized into two groups, one receiving the pharmacist-led intervention and the other serving as a control group. The intervention group will receive a medication therapy review, medication education, and individualized counseling from a pharmacist. The control group will receive usual care. The pre-intervention data will be collected at baseline, and post-intervention data will be collected after six months. The data will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics.
Week 1-2: Develop study protocol and obtain IRB approval
Week 3-4: Recruit study participants
Week 5-6: Collect baseline data
Week 7-9: Implement the intervention and collect post-intervention data
Week 10: Analyze and report study results
Regular progress reports will be provided to the project advisor, and the final report will be presented to the college committee and published in a peer-reviewed journal.
