As a medical professor, it is important to not only teach students the necessary skills and knowledge needed for their chosen career but also to ensure that they can communicate effectively with patients. This assignment focuses on summarizing and improving written reports commonly used in the medical field. Additionally, students will have the opportunity to practice rewriting reports to ensure that they can be easily understood by patients.
Part 1: Essay summarizing reports
The four reports provided cover a range of medical scenarios, including radiology, pathology, discharge, and operative reports. These reports are important for documenting patient care and informing healthcare providers of a patient’s medical history, diagnosis, and treatment plan.
In my chosen career as a physician specializing in cardiology, I will use these reports to communicate with other healthcare providers involved in a patient’s care. The reports provide a quick overview of a patient’s condition, enabling me to make informed decisions with regards to their care plan.
However, there is certain information missing from the reports that could be included to make them more informative. For instance, the pathology report could benefit from additional information regarding the characteristics of a tumor, such as its size, grade, and stage.
To improve the reports, it is important to use language that is easily understood by patients. Medical jargon can be confusing and overwhelming for patients, especially those who are already anxious about their health. By simplifying language, patients can better understand their condition and treatment plan. Additionally, using visual aids such as diagrams can help simplify complex medical information and make it more accessible for patients.
Part 2: Rewriting Reports
Report 1: Radiology Report
The main issue we found on your imaging study is a blocked vessel in your heart, also known as a coronary artery. Blood flow to your heart is reduced or blocked, which can lead to chest pain, shortness of breath or even heart attack.
During the imaging study, you were given a dye that helps us see the blood flow through your heart and showed a build-up of plaque in your arteries. This is a common issue that can be caused by high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking or diabetes.
The blockage in your coronary artery requires prompt attention, as it can lead to significant heart damage. We recommend further testing to determine if invasive treatment, such as an angiogram and stenting, is necessary to open the blockage and improve blood flow to your heart.
Report 2: Pathology Report
A growth was found on your kidney and requires removal.
The growth measured 3cm and was well-circumscribed. It was located on the upper pole of the kidney and appeared to be encapsulated.
Microscopic examination of the tissue revealed a renal cell carcinoma that has not spread beyond the kidney.
Report 3: Discharge Report
After your recent hospitalization, you will need to continue taking your medications as prescribed. You also need to follow up with your primary care doctor in the next two weeks regarding necessary testing and monitoring of your condition. Make sure to rest and avoid strenuous physical activity as advised by your doctor.
Report 4: Operative Report
Left shoulder pain and weakness.
The operative procedure performed involved removing a bone spur and repairing a torn rotator cuff tendon in your left shoulder.
The procedure was done using regional anesthesia, which numbs the shoulder area to block pain.
The procedure was done through two small incisions, using a small camera to examine and repair the rotator cuff. After successful removal of the bone spur and repair of the tendon, the incisions were closed and dressed with sterile bandages.
This assignment has allowed me to better understand the importance of clear communication in the medical field. By simplifying language in reports and using visual aids, healthcare providers can ensure that patients are well-informed about their condition and treatment plan. Additionally, I have gained valuable experience in rewriting reports to ensure that they are easily understood by patients, which will prove beneficial in my future career as a physician.
